Castle gates

I’ve given pictures of Hertford a rest for a few days – much to everyone’s relief no doubt!  But today we are back in the town again for a look at the gates of Hertford Castle.  The dark mass of the gates themselves and the bulk of the large arch towering over them are an imposing sight amidst the greenery and flowers which now cover the old castle grounds.

Black and white photography, amongst other things, can highlight the textures in a scene, and that’s one of the things which I like about this image: the studs of the gates puncturing the sheen of the wood, the harsh roughness of the stone wall, and the softer clumps of foliage trailing down.
